El Segundo, California
On Saturday August 16th, WAKA Kickball and Social Sports concluded their fourth and final Founder's Cup Qualifier - The West Coast Regionals. (16) of the most competitive kickball teams came out for a day featuring intense kickball, hot Southern California sun, over $5,000 in prizes, and an exclusive bid to the WAKA Founder's Cup Championship in Las Vegas.
The tournament took place at the world renown Campus El Segundo Athletic Fields. Nearly (300) players were in attendance to represent the best of the best that WAKA Kickball had to offer from the western region - including players from San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and San Jose. Competition throughout the day was fierce. After (10) hours of action, it was team Sofa King Good (CA) who took home the championship after outlasting Brew Crew Cartel (CA) in the finals, 4-1. Kelley G. (SKG) noted "Overall, the day was great! Great job by Sa [and crew], great competition, outstanding elimination round games. The loss in pool play [to Suns Out Guns Out] served as a wake up call, but we got the job done the rest of the day! #findthecash". Rounding out the Final 4, and the winners of a Founder's Cup bid includes the Kicktators (CA) and FYJ (CA).
As the winning team, Sofa King Good (CA) took home the top cash prize of $2400, and Brew Crew Cartel (CA) walked off with $1200 as the runner up. Another (30) players, however, took home awesome prizes from the tournament raffle, which included items such as beer pong tables, corn hole sets, bluetooth headphones, concert and festival tickets, and even a complimentary spot on the WAKA West Coast Cruise. The WAKA West Coast Regionals was produced and hosted by the WAKA SoCal Team, led by Regional Manger Sa Dao as well as Senior Community Coordinators Karen Fletcher and Amanda McCann. The tournament aside, the West Coast Regionals was a whole weekend affair, featuring a Friday Meet and Greet Neon Pub Crawl in downtown El Segundo, a post tournament After Party Saturday night at Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach, and a Hangover Brunch on Sunday morning. This year alone, the WAKA SoCal team has already hosted over 5 Southern California based tournaments and events, and are already hard at work on the next one.
Southern California's next WAKA Event is the 2nd Annual West Coast Cruise, November 14-17. The next WAKA SoCal kickball tournament will be the 2nd Annual Charity Bowl DEOC - a reverse coed kickball tournament where only (4) men can be featured on the field with (7) women. The tournament is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 6th. And, of course, the biggest event of the year - Founder's Cup and WAKApalooza Weekend in Las Vegas - takes place on October 10-12th. For more information, visit www.kickball.com
